DID YOU KNOW...

  • Solid fuels can produce a very clean-burning gas (Producer Gas) through a process called gasification.
  • Gasification has been a proven technology for more than 100 years (i.e. "gas lamp" era used coal gasification).
  • Agricultural crops and crop wastes are a plentiful source of biomass that can be gasified.
  • Solid wastes that cannot normally be burned for fuel, such as plastics, rubber, used paint & oil filters, etc., can be safely gasified with biomass.
  • Other wood-derived fuels, such as wood pellets, wood chips, and paper products, can also be used as fuel.

  • HOW YOU CAN SAVE...
    from Gasification
If you have an on-site need for heat (process heat, boilers, drying, etc.) Ag Bio-Power can help you save on energy costs. Corn is an excellent biomass to use for gasification, though it's not the only one. The gas produced from a bushel of corn has an equivalent energy value to natural gas at ONE HALF the fuel cost. (One bushel produces four therms.) Just as corn stoves and furnaces have shown that they are cost-effective alternatives to natural gas and propane heat, an Ag Bio-Power gasification system is a cost effective fuel alternative for larger commercial and industrial energy needs. In many cases, simply converting from natural gas to corn or another type of biomass as a fuel for your business can be justified by fuel cost savings. Beyond fuel cost savings, add onsite solid waste as a fuel and save even more by avoiding waste removal fees. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 offers investment and production tax incentives to producers and users of alternative fuels that can add to your advantage.

Tama News Herals, December 7, 2006
Ag Bio-Power LC of Tama, Iowa recently completed a project that was funded by a grant from the Iowa Corn Promotion Board known as the Iowa Corn Value-Added Grant (ICVAG). The $25,000 grant was used to "burn corn to dry corn."

Starting in Oct. of 2005, Ag Bio-Power owners, Joe and Sam Thiessen, set up a corn gasification system on the rural Chelsea farm of their parents, Bud & Marlene Thiessen.

Tama News Herald, July 1, 2004
A center to test and develop equipment which will allow small and moderate size businesses to generate their own power is expected to be completed in late July on Tama's east side. The fuel used to produce heat to generate the power are solid wastes which result from the manufacturing process at the businesses.

Three Thiessen brothers and a brother-in-law, all with local connections, co-own Ag Bio-Power LC, which has set up headquarters in the former Kaufman Auction House south of the Iowa Quality Beef Plant at 3344 L Avenue. The building may also be remembered as the long-time location of Larry's Feed and Supply.
